How to Make the Best Blue Cheese Dressing (or Dip)

This better than store-bought blue cheese dressing is incredibly simple to make and you probably already have most of the ingredients you need to make it in your kitchen. This creamy dressing is just as easy to make as our buttermilk ranch dressing, this creamy Caesar and our homemade Italian vinaigrette (which doubles as a marinade)!

Here’s what you will need to make it:

Sour cream and mayonnaise — For the best blue cheese dressing, use both. A combination of sour cream and mayonnaise make the dressing extra creamy. Mayonnaise can be heavy by itself. Adding sour cream lightens up the dressing a bit. If you’re used to only using mayonnaise, try adding a bit of sour cream next time. It’s a game changer. If you’re in the mood, you can make homemade mayo, too. Here’s our no-fail mayonnaise recipe. (We use the same combination of mayo and sour cream to make this creamy honey mustard sauce.)

Blue cheese — Use a blue cheese that you love. We usually go for something that isn’t too expensive and that tastes rich and creamy. Gorgonzola is a good option.

Fresh parsley — We’re big fans of fresh herbs, so we add them to just about everything. Fresh parsley adds both color and flavor to the dressing.

Salt and pepper — There will be some salt in the mayonnaise and cheese, but we always end up adding some additional salt to the dressing to make the flavor pop. Pepper adds some spice.

Milk or water — Depending on what you plan to use the dressing for, you might consider adding a little milk or water. Without it, the dressing is thick, which makes it perfect for dipping. If you want it to be pourable like a salad dressing, a splash of milk or water is the key.

Just a few seconds of stirring turns the dressing into a creamy and delicious mixture.

For a lighter dressing with fewer calories, you can swap the mayonnaise for light mayo and the sour cream for plain yogurt.

How Long Will Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing Last

Here’s the great news, this easy homemade dressing lasts for about a week when stored in the fridge. We love making a double batch so we can add it to salads, use a veggie dipping sauce, or spoon onto dinners throughout the week.

In fact, there’s a jar of it in our fridge now ready to be used in our favorite dishes. Here are a few suggestions for how to use this easy blue cheese dressing:

  • Skip store-bought salad dressing and use it on your favorite homemade salads. It’s especially delicious with baby greens, kale, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, sweet bell peppers, cauliflower, and broccoli. It’s also excellent with salads where you add fruit (like grapes, apples or pear).
  • Swap out the traditional dressing and use this blue cheese dressing to make coleslaw.
  • Add to a small bowl and use as a dipping sauce for fresh vegetables, roasted veggies (like these sweet potato fries), or anything buffalo flavored. We especially love these chicken wings, this buffalo chicken rice bowl, and these baked buffalo cauliflower wings.

Depending on what you plan to use the blue cheese dressing for, you might consider adding a little milk or water. Without it, the dressing is thick, which makes it perfect for dipping. If you want it to be pourable like a salad dressing, a splash of milk or water is the key.

Makes about 1/2 cup

You Will Need

1/4 cup sour cream

1/4 cup mayonnaise, try our homemade mayonnaise recipe

2 ounces crumbled blue cheese

1 tablespoon minced parsley

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, optional

Pinch fine sea salt

Pinch fresh ground pepper

Milk, buttermilk or water to thin out the dressing, optional


    Combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, blue cheese, parsley, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a small bowl and stir until well blended and creamy.

    Use the back of a spoon to press some of the blue cheese crumbles into the sauce for even more flavor. The dressing will be thick, which makes it perfect for dips.

    For a pourable dressing that’s perfect for salads, stir in a tablespoon or two of milk, buttermilk or water. Taste then adjust with additional lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

    Keep, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for one week.

    I am a super picky lover of blue cheese dressing. I made this last night and it ticks all the boxes. Rich, creamy, tangy, etc. I have never found a bottled dressing that does that and the ones I’ve made before fell short. I always have multiple types of bleu cheese in the freezer (such a good snack on Triscuits!!). I did add some Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco. Thanks so much for this tasty recipe!!

    i found the amt. of sour cream to be a bit too overpowering….and maybe go a bit lighter on the lemon juice? also….def. use a quality blue cheese. i used the one and only purchase they had available at aldi market. will likely get from a quality cheese deli next time. anyhow, i tweaked it a little to ease the overpowering of lemon and sour cream, by adding a bit more mayo., then thinning it out slightly with half and half, since i didn’t have milk, and didn’t want to water it down with h20. someone here mentioned using plain yogurt instead of sour cream….thinking i will try with yogurt next time. also…betting absolute, thorough mixing of ingredients is also beneficial!

    I am not a fan of blue cheese but my husband likes it. I happened to have half a head of iceberg and it was really hot all day after we were hit pretty hard by Isaias and our AC was out most of the day. I took out some frozen bolognese I made a bit ago and cooked some pasta but really wanted something cool and refreshing. I happened to have blue cheese as my husband like it on his burgers so I thought wedge salad though neither of us had ever had one. I had everything but sour cream as I prefer Greek yogurt, only substitution. Long story, lol, we loved it, perfect, tangy, flavorful and will definitely make it again! Thank you ?

    Yum! My husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday dinner and for the meal, I said crispy tofu or chicken buffalo wings, on top of a fresh romaine salad, topped with blue cheese dressing. We made a different blue cheese dressing that called for white wine vinegar and ratios that we didn’t like, and we hate wasting food, but we couldn’t stand to eat the other one. Then I found your site and we whipped up some mayo real quick and made your dressing and Ohhh goodness, SO GOOD! Thanks for saving my birthday meal!!!

    I will never buy blue cheese dressing again. This was so easy and sooooooo good. I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream because I had in the fridge. Love love love.

    Yes, this recipe does make blue cheese dressing which is better tasting than any store-bought dressing I have tried, and I have tried many. It is delicious and sets a new bar for blue cheese dressing!

    This is sooooo delish! Made it early to accompany some hot wings for Super Bowl (USA) 2020. I didn’t have parsley, so I subbed dill weed. I think the lemon juice really makes the flavors pop! Now I have to keep myself from eating it all before Sunday evening.

      OMG… I have a restaurant I absolutely love in NH that we go to a lot. And I could never decide btwn the homemade blue cheese or homemade dill dressing… so I would combine them and call it blue dill dressing. One of my all time faves!!! 🙂

        what a great idea…combining the two! i just bought ingredients for this blue cheese recipe.. don’t really want to bother with parsley…to me it seems a kind of waste of spice…really only serves to make a][sh look nicer, in my opinion. wondering if i could add a bit of dill into this recipe instead…..

    Microwaved the blue cheese for 30 seconds first, much easier to blend into the low fat plain yoghurt (avoid the mayo) and the sour cream. Parsley and zest of a lemon make a big difference. Good Recipe for someone who has never made it before. Thanks!

    I made this and it is so yummy. My only tweek was that I used fat free plain greek yogurt instead of sour cream (made me feel less guilty about the full fat mayo) and I added 2% fat cottage cheese. Great stuff!
