We love a good burger and usually keep them pretty simple — See our No Fuss Hamburger Recipe. That being said, it’s fun to go wild every now and then. Topping burgers with omelets, ham and lots of sauteed onions and peppers most certainly fits into that category.

While the burgers cook we make our omelet. Since we’re already going a little nutty, I like using two cheeses. Swiss cheese is my favorite for omelets and cheddar is my go-to for burgers. So we add the Swiss to the omelet and add slices of cheddar to the burgers just as they finish cooking. You can use any kind of cheese you like — Joanne was thinking a pepper Jack cheese would be nice to add some spice to the whole situation.

When the burgers are cooked and the omelet ready, we assemble. Start with warm toasted buns, slather a little mayonnaise onto the buns and build from there. Cheddar topped burger, lots of sauteed veggies, slices of ham, the Swiss cheese omelet and then the top of the bun.

Outrageous Burger Recipe with Egg, Ham and Peppers

This burger is over the top, but so delicious. When making burger patties, choose ground chuck or round that is 20% fat content. This makes the juiciest burgers.

Makes 4 burgers

You Will Need

Burgers

1 1/2 pounds (680 grams) ground beef chuck or round

Salt and fresh ground black pepper

Butter, as needed

8 slices sharp cheddar cheese

4 burger buns, lightly toasted

1/4 cup mayonnaise, see our homemade mayonnaise recipe

1/3 pound thin sliced ham

Peppers and Onions

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium red onion, thinly sliced

1 medium yellow or red bell pepper, core removed and thinly sliced

Salt and fresh ground black pepper

Omelet

4 large eggs

Salt and fresh ground black pepper

2 tablespoons butter

6 slices Swiss cheese

Directions

  • Make Burgers
  • 1Form beef into four 6-ounce hamburger patties. Use your thumb to imprint a dimple into the middle of each burger. (This prevents the middle of the burgers from puffing up while cooking). Season both sides of the hamburgers with salt and pepper.

2Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a cast iron pan over medium heat. Cook hamburger patties 3 to 4 minutes on each side, depending on how well done you like it. Or grill burgers on an outdoor grill. About 30 seconds before the burgers are done, add two slices of cheddar cheese on top of each patty. Rest burgers covered loosely with aluminum foil for 5 minutes then serve with omelet and toppings.

  • Cook Onions and Peppers
  • 1Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a skillet over moderately high heat. Add onions and peppers then cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, sweet and the edges are beginning to brown, about 8 minutes. Lightly season with salt and fresh ground pepper.

  • Make Omelet
  • 1In a non-stick skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter over medium heat. In a bowl, whisk 2 of the eggs with a pinch of salt and a few grinds of black pepper.

2When the butter is melted and begins to bubble, pour eggs into the center of the pan and stir with a rubber spatula for 5 seconds. Using a spatula, move around the edge of the egg mixture to loosen the edges. When the eggs are a semi-solid mass, add 3 slices of Swiss cheese. When the cheese is melted, shake the pan to loosen the omelet then fold one side over the other half of the omelet. Slide onto a plate and loosely cover with foil.

3Make a second omelet using the two remaining eggs following the same process as before. Cut each omelet into two pieces, making four smaller omelets.

  • To Finish
  • 1Assemble burgers. Spread mayonnaise onto both halves of each bun. Place the hamburger patty on the bottom half and add a quarter of the onions and peppers. Top with a quarter of the ham, one half of an omelet and the top of the bun.

Adam and Joanne's Tips

  • Burger Doneness: Rare = 120 degrees F; Medium-Rare = 130 degrees F; Medium = 140 degrees F; Medium-Well = 150 degrees F; Well Done = 160 degrees F

You forgot to mention where the cheddar cheese goes, but by the picture I can tell it’s mayo the buns, place burger on bottom bun, place cheddar on top of burger followed by some onions and peppers then on top of that place the omelet! I was looking for some good ideas on hamburgers and this one really hits the spot!

We just place the cheese onto the burger patties, this way it melts.

Holy moly! It’s like breakfast and lunch in one burger, which is indeed over the top but it looks fantastic.

That is completely ridiculous! But oh so yummy looking. I’ve had a fried egg on a burger before but never considered a full on omelette.

Wow! This looks really good! I can’t believe there’s an omelet in it. It’s pretty genius to me.
