How to Make The Best Mojito
We absolutely love the simplicity of a classic mojito cocktail. Thanks to white rum, fresh mint, lime, and a little bit of sugar, mojitos taste fresh and light, making them perfect for warmer weather!
Mojitos are easy to make for one or for a crowd. For the best tasting cocktail, don’t skip the fresh mint and freshly squeezed lime, they’re essential on this one.

Making mojitos in three easy steps
- Add fresh lime juice, sugar, and fresh mint leaves to a cocktail shaker.
- Muddle mint into the lime juice and sugar, releasing flavorful oils from the mint.
- Add rum, stir, and serve in a glass topped with a little club soda.
How to make mojitos for a crowd
To make mojitos in a pitcher, muddle mint into lime juice and sugar then stir in rum. If you plan on serving right away, add ice and top with club soda. If you are making the pitcher of mojitos in advance, wait to add the ice and club soda until you are ready to serve so it stays carbonated.
Which rum is best for Mojitos?
Traditionally, white rum is used to make mojitos. The rum you use doesn’t need to break the bank. A good quality, reasonably priced white rum will do the trick.
Mojito Variations
I love the classic mojito, but there are quite a few ways you can mix it up. Here are three of my favorites:
- Make strawberry mojitos by muddling sliced strawberries with the mint and lime juice. Or use a different fruit, we use blueberries to make blueberry mojitos, but peaches, blackberries, and raspberries would also be amazing.
- Make spicy mojitos by muddling slices of jalapeño or Serrano pepper with the mint and lime juice.
- Make ultra refreshing mojitos with cucumber. Just muddle a few slices into the mint and lime.

You Will Need
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) freshly squeezed lime juice
2 teaspoons sugar
8 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
2 ounces (1/4 cup) white rum
Ice
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) club soda
Lime slice for garnish
Directions
1Add lime juice, sugar and eight mint leaves to a cocktail shaker.
2Use the end of a wooden spoon or cocktail muddler to bash (or muddle) the mint into the lime juice and sugar. This releases oils from the mint and helps the sugar dissolve into the lime juice.
3Add rum, stir well, and then pour into a glass filled with ice, leaving about an inch of room. Top with club soda and serve with extra mint leaves and a lime slice.

Made this using plantation rum (dark), sweet blackberries and pomegranate, garnished with a candied orange slice. Random, but I just happened to have these particular additions lying around and wanted to use them up. So ridiculously easy, extremely flavorful. Will be keeping this one in my back pocket! Wish I could attach a photo!
Fantastic mojito recipe. I’m Cuban and I think you nailed it. A+++
So glad you loved it 🙂
Love checking out your recipes! Like reading a romantic novel?. I look forward to making a couple of them this weekend. Your directions and videos are simple and straightforward. Thank you! Pam
Great recipe, by using lime juice as opposed to muddling lime, mint & sugar you avoid the bitter oils in the lime skin. Best mojito I’ve made from this recipe.
Yay! Thank you so much for coming back to let us know you loved it 🙂
Delicious! But why do the drinks in the pictures look a different color? Dark rum instead of white? Brown sugar or syrup? Bitters? Something citrusy-yellow? The drink in the video looks as expected with these ingredients, as did ours. Just wondered if there is a secret ingredient, or maybe just the lighting.
Hi Patti, there is no secret ingredient. The drinks look different because the photo and the video were shoot at different times. Hope you enjoy the cocktail 🙂
nice drink,
very refreshing
Love it can’t get enough of it, best drink since the Bushwhacker.I have two daughters that live in USVI so every trip I always bring home lots of Rum, I tried this with whipped and Key Lime Rum and it was so wonderful, I grow my own mint, so now I may have to plant a lot more as the rum n mint are going to disappear fast with this recipe. Five stars and thanks for sharing!
Is there a reason why you stir instead of shaking? Just curious…
Hi Beth, Not really, you could do either 🙂
I first enjoyed a refreshing Mojito while on holiday in Mexico and I’ve never looked back, although that may be due to the fact that from that point on I don’t remember a thing! Seriously though the Mojito is an absolute winner, especially when shared with someone special.
Mojito’s are also good with dark spiced rum
Yep! That would be awesome.
I wish my little dry town had a bar where I could get these! Yes, I know you can make them yourself, but I don’t go through rum that quick.
Sounds delicious!
Ooh, you guys, I love a good mojito…has to be my favorite drink!!
I feel like an alcoholic looking at mojito recipes this early in the day…
